The Vellore Institute of Technology’s (VIT) three-day tech event, graVITas, featured the Robot Wars on Saturday at the Open Stage on the Vellore campus.
The creativity and ingenuity of students from various engineering fields including mechanics, electronics, electrical and communications are showcased at this event, which has been a regular event at VIT since 2008.
Saturday’s event was witnessed by VIT Vice President GV Selvam. “Developing a robot is no child’s play. It takes at least three years of concerted effort from like-minded teammates to make it work,” said Adwyck Gupta, a third-year EEE student at the institution.
Competitors in robot fighting are divided into 15kg and 60kg categories according to their weight and are operated remotely by students. Broken robots can be repaired and fought again within 20 minutes, but new robots cannot be replaced. On graVITas, 22 teams competed in 19 games to compete for the championship. The winning robot is decided based on three criteria – aggression, control and damage.
Activities such as these allow engineering students to apply what they have learned and gain some experience.
Another attraction of graVITas is the drone obstacle course. Participants had to fly their drone through a series of obstacles, such as arches and telephone poles, at a distance of approximately 200 m. The drone that crosses the track with the fastest speed will be declared the winner. A total of 32 teams participated in this competition.
During the three-day festival, 140 events will be held, attended by more than 13,000 students from various colleges and renowned universities across the country.
